The available Terrain can greatly effect the strategies of empires. Each terrain type provides bonuses to FidsSmall.png FIDS to a faction when near a city.

Some factions possess traits that effect the FidsSmall.png FIDS of certain terrain tiles:

  • The WildWalkersIcon.png Wild Walkers faction gain +1 IndustrySmall.png Industry on terrain with forests due to their "Living Towns" faction trait.
  • The NecrophagesIcon.png Necrophages faction lose -1 FoodSmall.png Food on terrain with FoodSmall.png Food due to their "Agriculturally Challenged" faction trait.
  • The BrokenLordsIcon.png Broken Lords faction gain +1 DustSmall.png Dust on terrain with DustSmall.png Dust due to their "Dust Efficient" faction trait.
  • The VaultersIcon.png Vaulters faction gain +1 ScienceSmall.png Science on terrain with ScienceSmall.png Science due to their "Knack for Knowledge" faction trait.

Additional Terrain Features[edit | edit source]

Rivers[edit | edit source]

Rivers provide +1 FoodSmall.png Food. They provide additional DustSmall.png Dust with the appropriate research. There is no additional movement cost for crossing a river.

Cliffs[edit | edit source]

Cliffs separate terrain tiles with substantial differences in height and block the movement of armies.

Foundations[edit | edit source]

Some ancient architect laid a foundation here that has stood the test of time. Given its location and the quality of the work, it is an ideal place to build a Watchtower.

Roads[edit | edit source]

Roads are automatically generated between cities in adjacent regions upon building the Right of Way city improvement unlocked by researching Imperial Highways. Roads in friendly and allied tiles reduce movement to 0.5.

Ruins[edit | edit source]

Ruins are spread throughout the map. They are ancient structures left by the Endless that, when explored by a hero or army, may grant a reward of StrategicIcon.png Strategic Resources, CategoryLuxurySmall.png Luxury Resources, or a quest. The DrakkenIcon.png Drakken faction gain +2 ScienceSmall.png Science and +3 InfluenceIcon.png Influence on terrain with Ruins due to their "Endless Excavation" faction trait.

Exploring ruins will have one of the following effects:

  • 20%: Quest
  • 60%: Instant reward
  • Temples: DustSmall.png or luxury resource
  • Ruins: DustSmall.png, strategic resource, or equipment
  • 20%: Nothing

The tech and hero skill reduce the chance of getting nothing by 10% each.
